Guidance and Counselling Office at Main Campus Holds an Event to mark Suicide Prevention Awareness Month Culmination

In line with Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, the Guidance and Counseling Office of J.H. Cerilles State College (JHCSC) Main Campus, led by Mrs. Jonah T. Salaguste, RGC, RPm, held a culminating activity at the Library’s Audio-Visual Room (AVR) on September 30, 2024. The event, supported by the Student Peer Facilitators and spearheaded by their president, Mr. James F. Gudmalin, a BA in Political Science student, aimed to raise awareness and promote mental health support among students.
With the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” and the call to action “Start the Conversation,” the event underscored powerful messages like “Life is Beautiful,” “You are Not Alone,” and “You Matter.” The day-long program was open to students without classes and with vacant time. It featured activities designed to engage and educate attendees, including a lecture on suicide prevention and awareness, indoor games, and a poster-making contest.
Mrs. Salaguste emphasized that their office is more than just a place for guidance and counseling. Students are also welcome to visit during their free time to avail themselves of services that help relieve stress and refresh their minds, including indoor games like chess, word puzzles, Jenga, and access to Netflix movies and massage chairs.
Before the formal lecture began, some student participants shared their feelings and expectations for the event. College Librarian Ms. Rudilyn C. Dayan, RL, MLIS, also shared a motivational message: “We should be grateful for every second of our lives. God has given us this opportunity to enjoy this life, and he blesses us so much.”

The lecture conducted by Mrs. Salaguste covered essential topics, including the facts and definitions of suicide, its types and levels, shared beliefs, risk factors, warning signs, prevention strategies, and mental health tips. She emphasized recognizing these warning signs and seeking help when necessary.
The culmination event highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of openness, where students feel safe sharing their experiences and seeking support. It served as a reminder that ongoing dialogue and community involvement are vital in suicide prevention efforts.
Through initiatives like this, JHCSC, under the leadership of President Dr. Edgardo H. Rosales, reinforced the significance of Suicide Prevention Awareness and the importance of every role of the individual in creating a supportive and understanding campus environment. -EMP
