The Community Extension Service Office (CESO) thru the School of Agriculture, Forestry and Environmental Studies( SAFES), in partnership with the Women Environmental Defender Association (WEDA) and the Barangay Council of Pantad, conducted a Mangrove Planting and Rehabilitation Activity today, September 14, 2024, in Barangay Pantad, Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur, which aims to significantly boost environmental awareness in preserving the mangrove ecosystem and its vital role in protecting the coastlines.
The activity was spearheaded by Dr. Rosanilio Yagos, BSES and MSERM Chairperson, with the support of Prof. Ricky A. Egos, Community Extension Services Office Director, JHCSC dynamic President, Dr. Edgardo H. Rosales, and Dr. Jerry B. Superales, Vice President for Research, Extension and Resource Generation and Dean of the School of Agriculture, Forestry and Environmental Studies (SAFES). There were almost 100 participants and volunteers. Students and faculty from the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (BSES) and faculty, BS in Forestry (BSF) faculty and students led by For. Nomar Ramoncito, Program Chair of the Bachelor of Science in Forestry (BSF), the students from the Master of Science in Environmental Resources Management (MSERM) under the School of Graduate Studies (SGS), residents of Barangay Pantad, members of the Women Environmental Defender Association (WEDA), and the Barangay Council were among the attendees, showcasing strong community involvement.
Despite the challenging weather conditions brought by the typhoon, 3,500 mangrove propagules were successfully planted at the Mangrove Sanctuary and Nursery in Barangay Pantad, Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur. Dr. Yagos expressed his gratitude to those who contributed to the activity’s success in his speech and encouraged continued collaboration to ensure the long-term success of the mangrove preservation efforts. Mrs. Corazon Mendoza, President of the Women Environmental Defender Association (WEDA), also conveyed her appreciation to the participants and partners, emphasizing the significance of the initiative in preserving and protecting the local mangrove sanctuary.
Mangroves are pivotal in maintaining ecological balance, protecting coastlines from erosion, and supporting diverse marine life. Through this initiative, the community addresses immediate environmental needs and lays the groundwork for long-term sustainability.
