JHCSC and Women Environmental Defender (WED) Forge Partnership for Coastal Management and Mangrove Conservation

In an effort to conserve and propagate the mangrove population in the coastal areas of Dumalinao town in Zamboanga del Sur, the School of Agriculture, Forestry, and Environmental Studies (SAFES) at JH Cerilles State College is partnering with the Women Environmental Defender (WED). Together, they are embarking on a mission to raise awareness about the environment, manage coastal areas, and monitor the ecosystem. This initiative was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Partnership Agreement (MOPA) for the Environmental Awareness, Coastal Management, and Monitoring Extension Project on October 7, 2023 at Pantad Elementary School, Pantad, Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur.

The signing ceremony involved JHCSC, represented by VP for Research, Extension, and Resource Generation Dr. Jerry B. Superales, and BSES Program Chair Dr. Rosanilio M. Yagos, as well as the Women Environmental Defender (WED) President Mrs. Leonora Cajote and its organizer Mrs. Corazon Mendoza. This collaborative effort aims to make a positive impact on the environment and coastal communities.

The pilot project for this initiative is being launched in the two coastal barangays of Pantad, led by Punong Barangay Hon. Efren Cajote, and Rebokon, led by Punong Barangay Hon. Joel Famor. Both barangay leaders are providing their full support to this project, and the residents in these areas have also shown their enthusiasm and support for the program. Also in attendance at the event were faculty members from BSES and MSERM, including Gypsie Claudine Cafe, MSc., Joe Michael Calanda, MSc., Ruel Lasagas, MSc., Homer Lao, MSc., and Engr. Alnur Tanondong, MSc. They played crucial roles as project proponents.

This collaborative effort is receiving strong backing from the local communities, which is essential for its success in conserving and propagating the mangrove population in the coastal areas of Dumalinao town.
