The first batch of Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (BSES) students from the School of Agriculture, Forestry, and Environmental Studies (SAFES) at J.H. Cerilles State College (JHCSC) successfully defended their research proposals during an inaugural event. This milestone took place on December 1-2, 2014, at the JHCSC Main Campus Research Conference Room in Mati, San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur. Over 100 students participated, grouped into teams of five, each presenting their proposed studies before a distinguished panel of experts.
The defense panel was chaired by Dr. Jerry B. Superales, SAFES Dean and Vice President for Research, Extension, and Resource Generation. Dr. Rosanilio M. Yagos, the BSES Program Coordinator, served as Vice Chair. In addition, Mr. Ruel S. Lasagas, MSc., College Research Director, also provided critical insights to ensure the students’ proposals met high ethical and research standards.
Other panelists included Thesis Advisers Mr. Joe Michael J. Calanda, MSc., Ms. Gypsie Claudine F. CafΓ©, MSc., Ms. Jo-ann Engano, MSc., and IPAO Director Mr. Homer T. Lao, MSc.,. The studentsβ proposals demonstrate the college’s commitment to producing significant research that addresses both local and regional environmental priorities.
The student researchers are scheduled to implement their studies in the upcoming second semester of Academic Year 2024-2025, marking an essential step in completing their course requirements. As they prepare to become the first graduates of the BSES program at JHCSC, this initiative exemplifies the leadership of JHCSC President Dr. Edgardo H. Rosales, positioning the college to be a leading institution for environmental science education in Region 9 and beyond.
