JHCSC, an institution committed to promoting inclusivity within the Indigenous community, officially launched the National Indigenous Peoples Month celebration today, October 7, 2024, at the Main Campus Gymnasium in Mati, San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur. The event, held under the theme “Mga Katutubo at Katutubong Dunong: Pahalagahan, Pangalagaan, at Parangalan” (Valuing, Nurturing, and Honoring Indigenous Peoples and Indigenous Knowledge),” highlights the importance of Indigenous culture and traditions.

The event was organized by the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), led by Dean Dr. Frederick F. Grengia, in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs Services (OSAS), headed by Dean Dr. Jonno E. Tan. Among the distinguished attendees were Dr. Vilma C. Grengia, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA); Dr. Jerry B. Superales, Vice President for Research, Extension, and Resource Generation (VPRERG); Mrs. Bemia Snooky A. Beboso, JHCSC Main Campus Administrator; as well as deans, faculty members, and students.

President Dr. Edgardo H. Rosales emphasized embracing and taking pride in our origins. In his message, he urged indigenous peoples to stand tall and not feel intimidated by the majority, reminding them that they are an integral part of the Filipino community. He further highlighted that their heritage and identity are sources of pride for themselves and the entire nation, as they embody the essence of being a proud Filipino.

As part of the ongoing celebration, Dr. Frederick F. Grengia invited the entire JHCSC community to participate in the various activities planned for the event’s culmination on October 31, 2024. The final day will feature an exciting competition among schools, showcasing indigenous food, crafts, traditional dances, and music. This vibrant event will highlight the rich cultural heritage of indigenous peoples and provide a platform for friendly rivalry, encouraging creativity and participation while fostering appreciation for indigenous traditions.

This event aims to promote and foster a deeper appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the indigenous peoples. It highlights their unique traditions, knowledge systems, and contributions to society and raises awareness about preserving and valuing indigenous cultures. Through this initiative, JHCSC underscores its commitment to inclusivity and its role in supporting the empowerment and recognition of Indigenous communities.
