The J.H. Cerilles State College (JHCSC) proudly celebrates another significant research milestone as Dr. Starr Clyde Lumanta Sebial, Dean of the School of Teacher Education (STE), together with his international co-authors, published a scholarly article in the Q1 Scopus-indexed and Web of Science–listed journal Thinking Skills and Creativity. The study, titled “Applying the Torrance Test: Developing a Rubric to Evaluate Function Art in Educational Settings,” advances innovative approaches to assessing creativity in STEAM classrooms by providing a standardized and psychometrically validated evaluation framework.

The research addresses the absence of an objective method for evaluating student-created function art—mathematical artworks produced through graphing functions. Anchored in the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT), the study developed a rubric based on three core creativity dimensions: Fluency, Flexibility, and Originality. By translating these theoretical constructs into measurable classroom criteria, the rubric enables educators to systematically assess both the mathematical sophistication and artistic ingenuity reflected in students’ outputs.

To validate the instrument, the researchers applied the rubric to 51 function artworks created by Grade 11 students using GeoGebra. The artworks were analyzed through the Rasch model to determine reliability and construct validity. Results demonstrated strong internal consistency and positive correlations among the three creativity dimensions, confirming that the rubric provides a robust and evidence-based tool for evaluating creative performance in interdisciplinary learning environments.

This Q1 Scopus-indexed publication further strengthens JHCSC’s growing reputation in research excellence and curriculum innovation. It highlights Dr. Sebial’s continued leadership in advancing research-driven practices in mathematics and creativity education, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to high-impact scholarship and meaningful contributions to global conversations on STEAM education and creativity assessment.

Soar high, J.H. Cerilles State College!
