The School of Teacher Education (STE) at JHCSC held its much-anticipated English Extravaganza 2024 on November 8 at the Main Campus Gymnasium, with the theme “The Language of Transformations: Stories that Unite Cultures.” The event was led by the Association of English Enthusiasts (ASSEN) President, Mr. John Paolo O. Elducal along with Mrs. Jezreel V. Verallo, MAEd, Adviser of ASSEN, and under the guidance of Mrs. Gejazhylle P. Engaño, MAEd, BSED Program Chair. The celebration received the full support of Dr. Starr Clyde L. Sebial, STE Dean, and conducted under the leadership of President Dr. Edgardo H. Rosales, alongside Dr. Vilma C. Grengia, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA). The event highlighted the role of English as a global lingua franca in bridging cultural divides and promoting international collaboration, communication, and cultural exchange.

The event saw significant engagement from key faculty members, including Jayboy M. Tizon, Ed.D., and Mr. Norhan B. Kudarat, MAEd, whose contributions were integral to the success of the celebration. Prominent student leaders, such as Hon. Cyrusdirk L. Elle, Student Trustee, and Ariel D. Dumingding, STE Mayor, also participated, offering their leadership and enthusiasm to the occasion.

Mrs. Jezreel V. Verallo expressed her appreciation to the ASSEN officers for their dedication and effort in making the event a success. She emphasized that English is not simply a medium of communication but a powerful tool for uniting people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. She further highlighted that the English language opens opportunities for individuals to connect, collaborate, and foster both personal and professional growth, reinforcing its role as a true “language of transformation.”

The festivities featured a range of engaging competitions, including solo and duet singing contests, jazz chants, and a runway model competition. Students formed teams representing eight mythical kingdoms— Oceandria, Aetheria, Umbralia, Chronos, Florae, Ethereis, Luminara, and Terranova —each reflecting a unique cultural and symbolic theme. The participants’ dress code creatively drew from mythology and literature, with costumes that embodied figures and symbols of transformation. This visual display highlighted how stories from diverse cultures transcend boundaries, uniting people through shared narratives of change and renewal.

The English Extravaganza aligns with ASSEN’s objectives by promoting English as a tool that bridges cultural divides and opens opportunities for education, professional growth, and international collaboration. The event provides students with interactive opportunities to practice listening, speaking, and thinking in English, helping to increase fluency and build confidence. Encouraging students to express opinions and engage in debates, fosters critical thinking and a deeper appreciation for the language’s power to connect and transform cultures.
