The office of the Gender and Development of JHCSC held the 2018 Women’s Day Celebration in connection to the observance of the International Women’s Month at Megayon Stage, Dao, Pagadian City. JHCSC Dignitaries, faculty and staff, and students from the organic campuses were gathered together to celebrate the said event with the theme, “We Make Change Work for Women”.
Honorable Junaflor “Sweet” Cerilles, the Municipal Mayor of Dumalinao and the President of the WEM-RIC Zamboanga del Sur, who just arrived from New York, United States as one of the delegates to the 62nd Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in the United Nations Headquarters, delivered a very informative and encouraging speech that empowered not just the women in the event but all the attendees. She stressed out that women who serve as housewives should not be discriminated and must be given high regard. The housewives should not be labeled as “unemployed” as they work like any other workers; they must be called “house managers” instead. She also shared her advocacy of protecting and preserving the environment.
Honorable Marlyn Revelo, one of the provincial board members of Zamboanga del Sur, shared how a woman can make change in the community and how significant the participation of the women in the development and welfare of the society.
In the Gender Got Talent, a showdown of presentations of the groups representing the organic campuses, Team Dumingag won the first place, second – Team Main Campus, and Team Canuto won third.
Governor Antonio Cerilles came in the event and gave his appreciation to the women leaders of the community especially the superwomen of his life (his mother, wife) and how they influenced him to be who he is today. He also pointed out that the government provides agency to protect the women from abuses. He even cracked a joke on why is that there is no law that protects men from women abuses.
GAD Focal Person, Mrs. Trinidad Abapo, ended the event with her words of gratitude to the supportive community leaders and to the active participation of the JHCSC family.
