School of Arts and Sciences

OVERVIEW

The School of Arts and Sciences had its simple beginnings. It was once a Department of Arts and Sciences that offered Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Mathematics and English. The viability of the programs: alternative choices of students who are dreaming to teach in higher education, to pursue legal profession and to work in offices that require the expertise of each specialization. It held classes in two vacant buildings, the Marcos type buildings which belonged to Mati, Elementary School situated in Barangay Mati, San Miguel, Zamboanga del Sur.

In 1998, the first year of program offering experienced an influx of students who came from different barangays and towns in the province of Zamboanga del Sur. Resources like instructional materials, classrooms, chairs and other needed facilities were limited to cater the student-clientele. But such scarcity was never a hindrance to continue to serve the clientele. The first wave of Teachers along with the Local Officials like Mr. Helinito R. Sabal and Mr. Demetrio T. Superales, Sr. initiated initiatives to assist the Program in its operation and growth.

The Lead Person of the Program was Ms. Mila Amerol-Samin, a MSU-Marawi graduate and a resident of a nearby town, Dinas, Zamboanga del Sur. She laid down the foundation of the Liberal Arts along with new set of Teachers. While building constructions were ongoing in the new site now the Main Campus, this program started launching varied activities for student development. Presentations on socio-cultural activities through literary, dance musical, sports fests, and tutorial classes were initiated to discover and develop the talents, skills or abilities of students who belong to the tri-people of the province.

In 1998, a new set of Instructors came in to cater the increasing student population. Among them was Ms. Patricia de Jesus-Bahian, an MSU-IIT graduate whose documents were instrumental to the opening of the English Program in the Education Department and later in the Liberal Arts. Along with its new Instructors, the department continuously launched activities that developed the soft skills of the students through Literary, Musical and Dance Competitions. Cultural rebirth was gradually unearthed and sustained among the tri-people. The Mati environment became a haven of dreams-come-true.

Mati, which in the past was a depressed area and being one of the critical areas of Zamboanga del Sur now became a cradle of education for the poor and deserving students in the province. Later, town folks and clientele from other parts of the major islands in the Philippines came, settled and started to put up businesses.

The conversion of JHCPC to JHCSC led to transitions and another phase of its growth and development. Designations of teaching and non-teaching staff members were instituted to continuously house programs like Associate in Health Education (ASHE) now the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)- a consortium to WMSU, Zamboanga City, Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM), BS Criminology and now a separate School.

In 2017, Bachelor of Science in Social Work was opened after complying the necessary requirements required and inspection by RQAT-CHED Region IX. The College acknowledged Ms. Perlaida Baang-Puno being instrumental to its opening. She was the first Program Coordinator. Her educational qualifications, trainings, documents and the like are among her significant contributions to the realization of BSSW Program.

With a new phase of management under the Deanship of Ms. Julieta Cebrero, Ms. Perlaida B. Puno, opted to relinquish her designation as Program Coordinator. At present, the BSSW has four (4) Permanent Instructors namely: Ms. Khenny B. Colocar, Mrs. Michille S. Aranjuez, Mrs. Perlaida B. Puno and at present Mrs. Darlene Daryl S. Nayo, the Program Coordinator. The Program expects for more BSSW Instructors to cater the increasing number of students in the Program.

The SAS, in its journey expects promising years ahead. The dreams of the Pillars- to educate, engage, innovate and sustain for global appreciation are annually celebrated in August, The Founding Anniversary.
