In celebration of the International Day of Forests, the JHCSC-National Service Training Program (NSTP) from Pagadian Extension Campus, led by Director Joniel L. Calibo, spearheaded a mangrove planting activity on March 21, 2025, in Balabawan, Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur. The initiative was conducted in collaboration with the Provincial Anti-Drugs Abuse Council (PADAC) of Zamboanga del Sur and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Pitogo, aiming to strengthen coastal protection through mangrove rehabilitation.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The activity gathered various participants, including the Supreme Student Council (SSC), Mrs. Janniece L. Magsayo, Pagadian Campus Student Affairs Department Head, LGU Pitogo representatives, Barangay Balabawan residents, and NSTP students. Their collective participation underscored the significance of community-driven environmental efforts in fostering ecological sustainability and coastal resilience.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Prior to the planting activity, an orientation session was conducted by Mr. Richard E. Aliser, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer (MENRO) of Pitogo. He provided insights on the crucial role of mangroves in mitigating coastal erosion, acting as natural barriers against storm surges, and serving as vital habitats for marine life. Additionally, Hon. Glendell I. Oyo-a, Alumni Trustee and PADAC Focal Person, discussed Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, to raise awareness on drug prevention and rehabilitation.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Hon. Jeyzel Victoria C. Yu, Congresswoman of the 2nd District of Zamboanga del Sur, also graced the event. She expressed her appreciation for the institution’s proactive approach to environmental conservation, aligning with her advocacy for sustainable development.
\nA total of six hundred (600) mangrove propagules were planted during the activity. Residents of Barangay Balabawan expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the initiative, acknowledging its lasting impact on coastal protection and biodiversity restoration.<\/div>\n
