The JHCSC School of Arts and Sciences, led by Dean Dr. Frederick F. Grengia, held an activity on October 31, 2024, at the College Gymnasium, in line with the culmination of the celebration of the National Indigenous Peoples Month and 27th Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (IPRA) Commemoration in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs Services (OSAS), headed by Dean Dr. Jonno E. Tan and with the support of the Office of Main Campus Director, led by Mrs. Bemia Snooky A. Beboso.<\/div>\n

The event gathered together JHCSC Main Campus college officials, faculty, staff, and students, some of whom wore tribal costumes, honoring the rich cultural heritage of our Indigenous People. The guest speaker, Mr. Jeo P. Huminis, Mathematics Instructor at Our Lady of Triumph Institute of Technology -Pagadian City, a pure-blood Subanen, shared insights about the Subanen Culture. He addressed the historical discrimination faced by his tribe, emphasizing that they are overcoming misconceptions about literacy and identity.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The program featured traditional Filipino games, including “Dakpanay ug Baboy ug Manok,” before progressing to major competitions such as the Runway Show showcasing Subanen traditional costumes, an Indigenous People’s Song performance, and Indigenous dance presentations by students from various JHCSC schools. A unique highlight was the Indigent Food Budol Fight Display Competition, where attendees enjoyed sharing traditional dishes after the activity.<\/div>\n

Dr. Vilma C. Grengia, Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA), thanked President Rosales for giving importance to National IP Month and implementing an activity related to this celebration. She also challenges students to balance life to preserve their culture in modern times.<\/div>\n

In his message, JHCSC President Dr. Edgardo H. Rosales stated, “There was no such as Indigenous Peoples Month Celebration before I assumed office in 2023. But during my first assumption, I could see the celebration’s importance. Your President is an advocate of IP Culture.” Pres. Rosales looks forward to this event next year, a sustainable month-long celebration in collaboration with the IP Community to preserve their cultural heritage through education.<\/div>\n
