The School of Graduate Studies (SGS) of J.H. Cerilles State College (JHCSC) actively participated in the seminar titled \u201cEmpowering Graduate Students Through Mental Health Awareness and Career Development\u201d held on October 25, 2025, at the JHCSC HRM Hostel. The event was initiated by the Guidance and Counseling Office, led by Ms. Catherine D. Cabal, RGC, RPM, with the support of SGS Dean and Campus Director, Dr. Patricia D. Bahian. The Student Peer Facilitators (SPF) also played an essential role in organizing and preparing the day-long activity. <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

The seminar primarily aimed to equip participants with the tools to manage academic pressure, nurture their mental well-being, and build emotional resilience. It also sought to foster a holistic sense of well-being, emphasizing that academic success must be complemented by mental stability and personal growth. It brought together graduate students from all programs under the School of Graduate Studies, who actively participated in discussions, asked questions, and shared insights during each session, demonstrating a commitment to enhancing mental health awareness and promoting professional growth. <\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

In her message, Dr. Patricia D. Bahian expressed her delight at seeing the students\u2019 enthusiasm and commended Ms. Cabal for her dedication and initiative. She acknowledged the various challenges graduate students face, including financial burdens, as well as emotional and mental struggles, and assured them that her office remains open to address their concerns. \u201cThe wealthiest person is the healthiest person,\u201d she reminded everyone, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing one\u2019s mental and physical well-being alongside academic pursuits.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Ms. Cabal shared that this was the first mental health and career development seminar conducted explicitly for graduate students. She thanked everyone for their active participation and emphasized the importance of such activities in addressing the real-life pressures faced by students who balance work, studies, and personal life. Ms. Cabal noted that the seminar also reflected the results of a needs assessment conducted earlier, which identified the need for stronger mental health support systems. She hoped that through this initiative, students would feel encouraged, supported, and better equipped to lead meaningful lives and careers.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

One of the key highlights of the event was the session led by Prof. Venus Avenido, Dean of Student Affairs and Services, who delivered a talk on \u201cNavigating Graduate School Life through Strengthening Mental Health.\u201d Prof. Avenido encouraged students to engage in self-reflection to understand their personal challenges better and develop resilience. She emphasized that mental health is equally important as physical health and discussed the importance of identifying one\u2019s stressors. Quoting Confucius, she reminded the audience, \u201cHe who conquers himself is the mightiest warrior,\u201d inspiring everyone to strive for inner strength and balance.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Adding depth to the program, Mr. Ebenezer Bana Malilay, Jr., from the Department of Education (DepEd), delivered a lecture on \u201cCareer Pathing and Progression for MAEd Students.\u201d He discussed new policies and guidelines under the education department and addressed specific concerns raised by students pursuing a Master of Arts in Education. Meanwhile, Ms. Jocelyn Dionisio from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) presented \u201cCareer Pathing and Progression for MSERM Students,\u201d sharing insights into opportunities and directions for those in environmental and resource management fields.<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

To make the event more engaging, the organizers included raffles and fun games that allowed participants to relax and unwind after the intensive discussions. The lighthearted activities fostered camaraderie among graduate students and served as a reminder that taking breaks is vital to maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle.<\/div>\n

The seminar concluded on a high note, with students expressing gratitude for the meaningful experience and valuable lessons they gained. The collaborative effort of the Guidance and Counseling Office, the School of Graduate Studies, and the Student Peer Facilitators demonstrated JHCSC\u2019s unwavering commitment to nurturing not only academically excellent individuals but also emotionally strong and mentally resilient leaders who can thrive both in their professional and personal lives.<\/div>\n
