JHCSC President Mary Jocelyn V. Battung and College Researcher Jerry B. Superales actively participated the writeshop entitled, “Improving mangrove socio-ecological functioning and carbon dynamics monitoring through coordinated assessment strategies in Mindanao, Philippines: A climate change perspective” (Mangrove-SeCarMP) held at the Premier Research Institute for Science and Mathematics (PRISM) Building, MSU- Iligan Institute of Technology, 9200 Iligan City on January 6-7, 2020.
It was organized by the Environmental Science Program of the Department of Biological Sciences, College of Science and Mathematics, Mindanao State University- Iligan Institute of Technology, 9200 Iligan City and the North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.
The main objective of the writeshop is to gather together research collaborators and scientists from selected Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) from the Visayas and Mindanao to learn together on the current knowledge and trends in mangrove research, state of the art instrumentation and protocols and come up with a consolidated research program for Mindanao. The main drivers of climate change, salt water intrusion and sea level rise were also highlighted.
Considering the sky-rocketting costs of the instruments, this research program will initially be implemented for a period of 2-3 years in one contiguous site namely, Laguindingan-Alubijid and El Salvador, Misamis Oriental. Knowledge gained from this collaborative research program can then be replicated in various research sites in the Visayas and Mindanao.
In facilitating the conduct of the writeshop, the research collaborators prepared in their own Institutions a number of capsule research proposals covering the four (4) components as spelled out and outlined in the research program framework made by the organizers.
JHCSC also prepared capsule proposals base on their expertise and research experience. During the writeshop, JHCSC with partner Institution presented their prepared capsule proposals for evaluation, discussion, refinement and integration. The DOST templates for the preparation of the Capsule Proposals were used.
The organizers of the event aim to seek the convergence of like-minded people looking for answers and solutions to a pervading problem besetting local communities worldwide.
In line with the program, JHCSC thru College System President Dr. Mary Jocelyn V. Battung signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with MSU-IIT represented by University Chancellor Dr. Sukarno D. Tanggol for academic and research collaboration.
